Maine’s From the First Tooth is an initiative supported by Sadie and Harry Davis Foundation, DentaQuest Foundation and North East Delta Dental. From the First Tooth initiative aims to improve the oral health of Maine children from the eruption of the child’s first tooth through 47 months of age by implementing an evidence-based preventive oral health intervention.
From the First Tooth integrates four components into primary care:
- Oral evaluation
- Application of fluoride varnish
- Health education for parents
- Referral to a dentist
These services are provided by primary care medical providers typically as part of well child care. Since 2007, From the First Tooth has trained approximately 75% of primary care practices throughout the state of Maine. From The First Tooth provides on-going technical support and quality improvement.

Important Announcement: 2018 marks the tenth year of statewide implementation of From the First Tooth. Over the course of the almost-decade, steady progress has been made to increase the number and percentage of Maine children reached, thanks to our many partners and collaborators. As part of a natural evolution, From the First Tooth has joined other statewide partners to build a broader effort to address the challenges of children’s oral health under the umbrella of the newly-formed Partnership for Children’s Oral Health.
